I think there have also been a few professional people [I see as role models]. Anne Huppman, who was the very gentle but very firm ex-director of the Maryland Planned Parenthood, who was the one that saw to it that I went on staff, and kept telling me that I needed to make this a career and that was very important I think. The founder of the Alan Guttmacher Institute who helped point the way into the merger of one's health interest with political interests [and] with political activism -- Fred Jaffe was his name. The chair of the department who is now a close colleague, Dr. Henry Mosley, who has worked all over the world and Dr. Carl Taylor, who worked in India almost all his life.
