I think [the connection between my parents' activism and their Jewish heritage] became clear during the holidays. Their activism was year-round, and then during the Jewish holidays, it was directly spoken of, like Passover and liberation movements. Liberation movements were talked about year-round and then on Passover liberation movements were talked about with regard to Jews... It became clear growing up that most Jewish holidays were about the survival of the Jewish people and the triumph of the Jewish people, and there was always talk about the survival and triumph of other people, whether it was gays and lesbians or women being free of their particular oppression.
