The religious holidays were always very important to my family. My late husband came from a traditional family and was equipped to head Friday night services in our small congregation. There were only forty Jewish families in the town of 22,000 inhabitants. However, they were respected citizens and we were very comfortable as Jews—with a good sense of self.
