During
WWII, Picon performed at army bases all over the U.S.
and Canada in an effort to boost morale. I sang to
1,400 boys at Camp Ritchie in Maryland, and it was
thrilling. I played the Portsmouth Navy Base, the seaman’s
canteens and the USOs. In between, I did vaudeville at the
Greenwich Village Inn, with shows at 9:00, 12:00 and 2:00a.m.
I’d crawl into bed at four in the morning, then wake with a
headache that lasted all day...How did I stay sane?
