Gabrielle Orcha is a freelance writer, choreographer, and performer. Artistic Director of her Boston-based company, Orcha Dance Theatre, she is an exuberant and spirited woman and spends much of her time in the studio creating and collaborating or in the air, leaping for joy (see picture). She is fond of fiddlers, good prose, and good people (see mensches). A fervent believer in the concept of beshert—which means fate, destiny, or one’s soul mate—she aptly named the new and exciting arm of her company, which performs at weddings and bar mitzvahs, The Beshert Brigade of Dancing Celebrants (see brazen plug). Also: she identifies with the word “chutzpadik,” loves how it just rolls off the tongue.

JWA Blogger Desk Perspective

Letter from an (inspired) intern

It is with great pleasure that I write to you from a very special seat, at a very significant desk, at the offices of the Jewish Women’s Archive where I worked as the Social Media Intern this summer. I said to my predecessor, Online Communications Specialist and “blogger-in-chief,” Leah Berkenwald, “There must have been applicants storming the doors for a chance at this position!” No, she said, there weren’t hundreds. But there should have been.

The Pain Post

To be human is to feel pain. Show me a soul that has walked this earth, that has lived and died unscathed, unscarred—physically and emotionally.

Woman in field with rainbow

Tu B'Av: The Morning After

I have always loved Tu B’Av, a holiday that honors the ancient tradition in which maidens, dressed in white, gather and dance in the fields and vineyards, intent on meeting their beshert, their soul mate. Per tradition, the unmarried men of the village came out in droves and watched the women dance. There is a discrepancy regarding who “chose” whom during those ancient times. Perhaps it was mutual: eyes and hearts locking in, the couple leaving together to embark on their life of male-female partnership.

Olympic Rings

Dear Aly: I could nevah hava (nagila) 'nuff of you!

Dear Aly,

Though you’re ten years my junior, you inspire me. At five feet two inches, you are strong—in body and spirit; you are open and kind; you are level-headed and take things as they come.
