Biographical Information: Sarah Kussy, an educator and community worker, was raised in one of the most established German-Jewish families in Newark, NJ. Born in 1869, she attended public school, and then went on to New York University's Extension School, and the Jewish Theological Seminary's Teachers' Institute. Kussy taught for over thirty-five years in both public and Hebrew schools in the Newark area. She was also part of an early twentieth-century network of influential American Jewish women committed to advancing Judaism, women's roles in Jewish life, and Zionism. With other members of this group, she helped to found Hadassah and the National Women's League of the United Synagogue of America (now the Women's League of Conservative Judaism). She remained active in both of these organizations throughout her life, filling many local, regional and national positions. Kussy's commitment to Zionism also led her to help create the American Jewish Congress and Young Judea. She served as a delegate to the Jewish Agency for Palestine and to five World Zionist Congresses. One recognition she received for her work for the Jewish state was the Sarah Kussy Forest, planted by Hadassah in 1950, containing ten thousand trees. Sarah Kussy died in 1956.
